Bilborough Town 3 - 1 Gedling Southbank
Good win with a wakeup call to go with it.
A hard-worked win today against Gedling Southbank. We beat them in a friendly quite comfortably, but today’s game was a different matter. Some of the boys from our Sunday team had played against some of them last week in a hard fought draw and I think that may have been in the back of their heads at the start.
We kicked off slightly earlier which meant we didn’t have time to get warmed up properly and I think a few of the lads have been giving the new Fifa 18 some stick and a few late nights!
Within 5 minutes of the first half we started showing what we are capable of. Lleyton and Branden worked well together to cross it over for Zack to knee (or it could have been a thigh. Who knows? ) the ball into the goal 1-0 start.
We were not winning our individual battles and were giving the ball away cheaply with Gedling always looking threatening on the break. Our defence was holding well with Elliott and Rhys continuing to develop a great working relationship at the centre of the defence. Just need a little bit of composure on the ball sometimes. Jamie was as solid as ever at left back with Lleyton fitting in well at right back although again just needs to relax when he has time on the ball.
20 minutes in and although we were not controlling the ball as much as we liked we managed to stretch the lead. Branden again became supplier and set up Jackson who calmly found the net. 2-0 and Jackson nearly made it three with a candidate for miss of the season after putting it over the bar from the six yard box.
We had a corner soon after and Theo whipped the ball in, how it evaded an Orange toe to poke it in the net is beyond understanding.
Theo was working well down the left with Ib’s and Ewan now marshalling the centre of the park and becoming our play maker with every game he plays. Theo got the ball and threaded a great early ball to Zack just inside the box, back to the goal. Zack turned his man brilliantly and got the ball onto his right foot and clinically shot into the net, 3-0 on the 29th minute and now looking more confident.
The second half was a different game with Gedling pushing numbers up and really testing our resolve. We had some good chances and their keeper made some great saves from Jackson and Zack. We need to be a bit quicker on the finishing sometimes.
Gedling though were starting to really come at us. Charlie had come on at right back and was rolling his sleeves up with some great interceptions and no nonsense clearances. Rais was tackling hard and starting to knock some great balls to the boys up front.
However Gedling hit us on the break on the 19th minute and managed to poke the ball past Hayden although Rhys and Elliott will be disappointed to conceive the goal.
Luca was starting to do well in Midfield with Ryan and Joshua working hard up and down the flanks. Ryan was playing some great football with Jackson and Jackson almost made it four after some 1-2 football with Ryan but hooked it wide of the left post.
At times some of the boys were a little ambitious with trying to shoot from too far out and also not releasing the ball early enough for players in great wide positions.
Hayden towards the end made a great save at the feet of their striker keeping the distance still up by two. He was always helping the defence offering the ‘home’ pass if required. He just needs to get some height on his kicks to help clear the ball.
At times we wanted to play a passing game but the options taken put the defensive players and our keeper under pressure when a foot through down the line would have eased the pressure. Something to work on next Thursday.
Rhys had a good Captains performance putting himself on the line a few times with some great cover tackles. In the last 5 minutes Gedling pushed again and a goal mouth scramble ended with Charlie making some last ditch tackles and an amazing clearance off the line denying Gedling a second.
The final whistle went and although we won by two goals we know we have to improve for our next match against Westbridgford firebolts. It was not our best performance but we ground out the win which is a great attribute to have knowing we can play a lot better and still getting the win.
Parents MOTM went to Charlie who really showed some spirit today and defended magnificently. Managers MOTM went to Branden who set up two and was always looking to bring players into the game and Elliott who really performed well at the centre of the defence making strong tackles and clearing the ball well..
A bit of a wakeup call to the boys that every game is not a push over and you have to roll your sleeves up sometimes and put the work rate in to win the game.
